It cannot be certainly known whether the form of “Aucassin and Nicolete” was a familiar form used by many jogleors‚ or wandering minstrels and story-tellers such as Nicolete‚ in the tale‚ feigned herself to be‚ or whether this is a solitary experiment by “the old captive” its author‚ a contemporary‚ as M.

Then in the s, Golden Eagle produced a series of diminutive, limited-edition poetry books. It was the sort of project that interested me. In particular, one of those Golden Eagle titles, The Song-Story of Aucassin and Nicolete, linked Jacobs with the noted type designer William Addison Dwiggins in a way that seemed strangely overlooked.

Aucassin et Nicolete was written in medieval France, but it’s not your typical roman d’amour. I haven’t actually read any other medieval romances. My expectations of “typical” are all formed on stereotype. In many ways, Aucassin and Nicolette meets those fairy tale stereotypes.

On the other hand, something goes quite “wrong” in this love story, for Aucassin. Indeed the form of Aucassin and Nicolete has a similar 'bob-and-wheel' as does Sir chant-fable ends with a happy marriage, unlike the broken discord of Camelot between Arthur and Guinevere, or the premonition of Boethius' brutal execution, though Charles of Anjou carried out similar brutal punishments on his subjects in his dungeons.

Aucassin and Nicolette, Andrew Lang, George Routledge & Sons Ltd,First Illustrated Edition This is an anonymous medieval French fictional story. It is the unique example of a chantefable, literally, a "sung story", a combination of prose and verse. Aucassin and Nicolete. INTRODUCTION.
